Vice Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences<\/a>, Universitas Padjadjaran Prof. Dr. Atwar Bajari, M.Si., explained the results of his research entitled “Hate Speech Culture in Virtual Space ( Social Media)<\/em>” in the 64th episode of One Hour Talking Science (SaJaBi) Podcast on January 29, 2022. This activity was organized by the Unpad<\/a> Professors Council and attended by Unpad Professors including Prof. Deddy Mulyana, M.A., Ph.D., and Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Mahfud Arifin, MS., through the Zoom Meeting.<\/p>\n

Prof. Atwar explained that hate speech is usually related to words that incite and support hatred against an individual’s race, color, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or other forms of discrimination. Meanwhile, in the social media space among young people, the issues that trigger the highest level of hate speech are racism, sexism, religion, and homophobia.<\/p>\n

Prof. Atwar uses the ethnographic method of communication which also utilizes data analytics<\/em> in conducting his research. There were 11,504 comments from Facebook that were analyzed with qualitative and quantitative analysis. This was done to find out how far the hate speech appeared in the social media space, in this case related to the issue of the 2019 presidential election and the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Hate speech in the comments section, especially among Facebook users in Indonesia, tends to go both ways. For example, when a pro-government group throws up a certain issue, then the other side will provide resistance and so on. According to Prof. Atwar’s analysis, this is like a live chat. This is also due to the user generated content<\/em> nature of social media.<\/p>\n

One of the interesting things is that even if a pro-government or opposition account posts a neutral status, it can still trigger hate speech in the comments.<\/p>\n

“They (pro-government or opposition accounts) make neutral statements<\/em>, but in practice they can still cause attacks in the form of offensive words or words that make other people offended by the comments of netizens,” said Prof. Atwar Bajari.<\/p>\n

He also mapped 10 issues on Facebook related to COVID-19. For example, the issue of responding to the central government during the pandemic on pro-government accounts. After analysis, 65% of the comments were suspected of containing hate speech in them. Other issues analyzed include economic issues, PSBB (Large-Scale Social Restrictions), health protocols, new normal, and religious issues.<\/p>\n

For the words used in hate speech, they usually use adjectives related to disgusting, pathetic, ugly, stupid, rude, to retarded. The purpose of these words is to insult, intimidate, accuse, cuss, and promote violence. Prof. Atwar said dungu<\/em> and otak<\/em> are two popular words used by Indonesian netizens in the use of hate speech. “The word brain<\/em> is also quite popular in the use of hate speech,” he said.<\/p>\n

Prof. Atwar also explained the process of the emergence of hate speech. It begins with an event that is made into news, then responded to by influencers<\/em> and\/or buzzers<\/em> through their social media accounts, after which many comments appear which also include hate speech. After Prof. Atwar explained the results of his research, there was also a discussion session that discussed the relationship between hate speech and democracy in a country, to the correlation of a person’s character in everyday life (real world) and on social media.
