The XVI Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) 2021 was officially opened on November 5, 2021, after previously holding the XX National Sports Week or PON Papua 2021<\/a> on October 2-15, 2021. Peparnas XVI Papua will be held on November 2-15, 2021. This premier national sports competition for people with disabilities takes place in Jayapura City and District. Peparnas 2021 competes in 12 sports and presents around 1,985 athletes from 33 provinces. The host Papua Province is the General Champion at Peparnas 2021 with 294 medals, the second position is occupied by West Java Province with a total of 256 medals, and the third position is occupied by Central Java Province with 215 medals. Elda Fahmi Nur Taufiq and Wawa Gunawan are two athletes who helped lift West Java Province to second place.<\/p>\n

Elda Fahmi Nur Taufiq, is one of the athletes who made West Java proud through his achievement in winning a gold medal at Peparnas Papua 2021 in the judo sport for visually impaired men’s category 66 kg class.<\/p>\n

In the VOC Podcast #1 interview, Elda said that she had been blind since birth, then when she was 18 months old, Elda had a surgery that went well until she could finally see. Unfortunately, when Elda was 3 years old, she developed glaucoma and cataracts, and since then she has undergone many treatments for her eyesight. At the age of 6, his cataracts were successfully removed by the doctor and replaced with artificial lenses. Unfortunately, Elda had an accident that resulted in the lens breaking. After the incident, the performance of Elda’s eyes declined further until she eventually went completely blind. However, Elda admitted that she was happier with her current situation, as she felt that she had spent a lot of time on medication since she was a child, and it made her feel guilty. Therefore, Elda feels grateful that she can now live independently.<\/p>\n

His introduction to the world of judo was quite interesting. Prior to judo, Elda said that she already loved chess, swimming, and running. When West Java was selected to host the Peparnas in 2016, the government organized judo training for people with disabilities in 2014. Elda and her friend joined the training, and that’s how she got into judo.<\/p>\n

Elda admitted that she had experienced insecurity<\/em> because she felt that her training progress was not meeting her targets. Nevertheless, Elda’s friends continued to provide enormous support. They even took Elda, who was fast asleep, to the judo training center and brought her judo clothes so she could join the training. The support from the people around Elda regarding her judo activities makes her feel very happy. The process she went through to get to where she is now was not instantaneous; there were times when Elda found it difficult to recognize moves, such as locks and slams. However, over time and with a lot of practice, Elda was able to figure out the outline of the moves, and even came up with her own variant. He can feel this after meeting many people who have different techniques.<\/p>\n

During his journey as an athlete, one of the five pioneers of disability judo in West Java has participated in at least 6 to 7 matches. Amazingly, he always brings home a medal from the championship, ranging from bronze medals, silver medals, to gold medals. Elda admits that this can also happen thanks to the prayers and support of her family. Currently, the man who is interested in learning financial literacy is studying Guidance and Counseling at IKIP Siliwangi. Elda wants to try to contribute to the service for those with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Wawa has started her weightlifting career since 2017. In addition to his activities as an athlete who regularly trains, Wawa also actively manages a workshop located at GOR Padjadjaran. During Wawa’s appearance on VOC Podcast #1, he said that he usually does activities in the workshop before attending rehearsals. Wawa admits that he loves automotive-related things. One manifestation of this is by making a three-wheeled motorcycle that can help the mobility of people with disabilities. For him, of all the championships he has participated in, the Porda Jabar 2018 held in Bogor Regency was the most memorable event, because it was his first match. Wawa said that his current success was also accompanied by the support of people around him, especially by his parents.<\/p>\n

Wawa Gunawan also conveyed a message to other friends to keep their spirits up, have a strong spirit, and never give up. “So we have to prove to ourselves that we can, we are capable, we are strong, just disability is the spirit of everything,” he added.<\/p>\n
