<\/p>\nThe Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University is holding a Webinar entitled “Digital Media and its Implications for Social Change” online through Zoom Meeting on Thursday, August 4, 2022 starting at 09.00 WIB. This activity is one of a series of 62nd Anniversary activities of Fikom Unpad on September 18, 2022 which presents Prof. Dr. Eni Maryani, M.Si. and Novi Kurnia, Ph.D as speakers.<\/p>\n

Dean of Fikom Unpad, Dr. Dadang Rahmat Hidayat, S.H., S.Sos., M.Si. in his remarks said that technological developments and digitalization in the field of Communication Science itself still tend to be new, therefore there is a need for further understanding of digital media, especially regarding the issue of digital literacy on social change. “This digitalization also talks about access, talks about justice”. According to him, with the diversity of Indonesian society, digital literacy or media literacy that is still uneven will potentially lead to conflicts such as social degradation, as well as psychological aspects of individuals, groups\/communities, and even nations.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the material with the topic “Digital Literacy as a Social Movement: Towards a Safe & Inclusive Digital Space” was presented by Novi Kurnia, Ph.D. In his presentation, he said that digital security is a process to ensure the use of digital services, both online and offline, can be done safely. Not only securing the data we have, but also securing personal data that is confidential.<\/p>\n He also explained that the digital literacy movement in Indonesia is still not very strong in synergy or collaboration between actors. So far, the most influential partners in the digital literacy movement are schools such as elementary, middle and high schools. “There are 4 important pillars to dispel the myth that ‘being literate is not literate‘ <\/em>, because skills are not enough but also awareness of being a citizen in the digital space. Then also become ethical and safe members of society,” he said. The four important pillars are Digital Skill <\/em>, Digital Culture <\/em>, Digital Ethics <\/em>, and Digital Safety <\/em>. The webinar was closed with a closing statement <\/em>from the speaker who explained that these pillars exist as support for the digital literacy movement which acts as a way to carry out digital transformation so that people are not only familiar with the use of digital techniques, but also aware, ethical and cultured. The webinar was moderated by Justito Adiprasetio, MA. The event began with the presentation of the material “Digital Media and Public Space” by Prof. Dr. Eni Maryani, M.Si. In his presentation, he emphasized that digital media in Indonesia itself has been able to cover almost all Indonesian people from west to east, but most opinion leaders <\/em>who disseminate content on social media still do not have the competence or credibility to be able to present information to their followers. In addition, it is important for us to understand that most information exposure in digital media has been adjusted to algorithms that are relatively in line with the thinking of digital audiences, which can lead to polarization that makes it difficult for digital media audiences to accept the views of others in the public sphere itself. He also stated that challenges to the public sphere in digital media will arise when regulations that harm audiences are made. “In my opinion, the regulation is indeed necessary. However, in my opinion, in the context of the existence of these regulations, there needs to be supervision, both for business actors and the government,” he said. This means that regulations related to digital audiences should indeed be able to minimize adverse impacts, instead of raising concerns such as the emergence of efforts to silence criticism, privacy violations, and content domination.
