Jatinangor, 10 May 2023 – Journalism Study Program and Television and Film Study Program from Faculty of Communication Sciences Unpad<\/a> held a public lecture attended by Professor Julian Millie from Monash University.<\/a> This public lecture was moderated by Rangga S. M. Permana, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom. who is a lecturer in the Television and Film Study Program. This public lecture was held on May 10, 2023, by discussing about Cross-cultural Communication Competence on a Global Scale <\/em>with the Zoom Meeting platform. This public lecture aims to add insight to students from the Journalism Study Program and the Television and Film Study Program as well as to complement Cross-Cultural courses.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In addition to explaining about Cross-cultural Communication Competence in a Global Scale, <\/em>Professor Julian also touched on newspaper media analysis as an important aspect of cross-cultural communication <\/em>, shaping public space in Indonesia, and the role of Islam in newspaper media in Indonesia. In his presentation, Professor Julian Millie attracted the attention of the students by showing that he is proficient in speaking Indonesian and Sundanese. In this public lecture, Professor Julian asked, “Why are newspapers important for intercultural communication?” According to him, newspapers are the most important media to create a public space where people can find out the latest information and news in the neighborhood. He said that newspapers are a medium that forms public space and is intended for the public so that the information contained in newspapers is general and must cover the entire community. In other words, newspapers can also be deliberative and secular. In addition, he also thinks that newspapers are the most important medium for creating what he calls “the public<\/em>” and for cross-cultural communication. He provides a key idealization of the “public-making<\/em>” of the newspaper itself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then, Professor Julian brought up a saying from Charles Taylor about secularism and the public sphere.<\/em> Charles Taylor said that somehow secularism and the public sphere <\/em>are associated because they are shaped by things beyond the common actions we perform in them; coming to the public mind, if you will, through the exchange of ideas. Professor Julian also brought up the term print capitalism <\/em>, which refers to the publishing of books, newspapers and newspapers. According to him, print capitalism <\/em>made Indonesians begin to recognize the existence of life outside there because Indonesia at the time of colonization the government system was in the form of a kingdom so that the people did not know that there was life outside the kingdom.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today in Indonesia, journalism and the press are growing along with the development of Islam and its role in the press. Professor Julian explained that Islam has influenced journalism in Indonesia and produced daily news stories that focus on the Islamic perspective. Therefore, there are limits to the influence of religion that should be practiced in the field of journalism. Indonesia has a media called Republika which was later analyzed by Janet Steele and the result of her analysis is that Republika publishes commercial and conservative interests, does not provide critical coverage as desired by cosmopolitans and becomes a “victim” of the internal diversity of the Islamic community. Based on Professor Julian’s analysis of Pikiran Rakyat, he said that the media is a newspaper from West Java that also follows the realization of the worship agenda in accordance with the Islamic calendar. So, the conclusion of this segment <\/em>is that Pikiran Rakyat newspaper is an Islamic newspaper because it participates in spreading routines, encouraging and facilitating spiritual commitments that can ethically touch the public.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The closing point of today’s public lecture material is to explain that media circulation can shape the public, there is no fully inclusive public that embraces the entire community. He argued that at present, journalism and the press in Indonesia are growing along with the development of Islam and its role in the press. Islam has become one of the influences of journalism in Indonesia and produces daily news that focuses on the Islamic perspective. It is not surprising that the press in Indonesia has elements of Islam given that the majority of the population in Indonesia is Muslim. Therefore, there are limits to the influence of religion that should be practiced in the field of journalism.
