The Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran (Fikom Unpad) on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 held a book review event entitled ‘Theories of Communication: Practical Applications’<\/strong> which presented Prof. Deddy Mulyana, M.A., Ph.D. as the author of the book and Dr. Sri Seti Indriani, S.IP., M.Si. as the moderator. It took place at the Postgraduate Auditorium of Fikom and this event was also broadcast live via YouTube Fikom Unpad Official. In the Book Review of Practical Application Communication Theories, there were several book reviewers, namely Prof. Dr. Atwar Bajari, M.Si, Prof. Dr. Lely Arrianie, M.Si., Prof. Dr. Neni Yulianita, Dra., M.Si and Dr. phil. Subekti W. Priyadharma, S.Sos., M.A.<\/p>\n

    The event was opened by Prof. Deddy Mulyana, M.A., Ph.D.. He discussed the development of communication theory and research methods in the field of health communication. He explained that doctor-patient communication that used to be linear has now evolved to be more interactive. The book discussed aims to help understand the relationship between communication theories, research paradigms, and data types, as well as how to analyze qualitative data in complex and non-deterministic research.<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    Prof. Deddy also highlighted the differences between publications in developing and developed countries, emphasizing the importance of publications in Scopus in developing countries. He shared personal experiences of writing books and the financial challenges of publishing, and criticized the capitalist ideology behind academic publications that often require high fees. He emphasized that the value of academic work lies in its substance, not just in its publication status, and stressed the importance of quality and substance in academic work. After the opening from Prof. Deddy Mulyana, M.A., Ph.D. as the author of the book, then continued with the book review event which opened with the moderator introducing the book reviewers who would discuss.<\/p>\n

    The book review discussion began with Prof. Dr. Atwar Bajari, M.Si who expressed his opinion about the book ‘Communication Theories: Practical Applications’<\/strong>. Prof. Atwar Bajari, M.Si, said that Prof. Deddy’s book is organized in a narrative style that may be difficult for new students to follow. This book does not explain the theories explicitly, but focuses on understanding the function and testing the theory. Prof. Atwar Bajari notes that although the book does not follow the conventional format and ignores some aspects of the interpretive and constructivist approaches, Prof. Deddy still makes an important contribution to communication studies in Indonesia. He appreciated Prof. Deddy’s dedication and influence in the field.<\/p>\n

    After that, Prof. Dr. Lely Arrianie, M.Si, shared her college experience that was influenced by Prof. Deddy. She recounted the dissertation writing process and how Prof. Deddy, despite his initial skepticism, motivated Prof. Lely to keep going and pass the exam without revision. Prof. Lely also revealed how Prof. Deddy’s book sparked her interest in writing for the media and becoming a spokesperson, and emphasized the importance of applying communication theory in practice.<\/p>\n

    Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Neni Yulianita, Dra., M.Si expressed her gratitude to various professors who influenced her education, including Prof. Deddy. She considers Prof. Deddy’s book as an important source for understanding various communication theories, although she thinks the book could have a more interdisciplinary approach. Prof. Neni mentioned how important it is to understand communication theories such as symbolic interaction, ethnography, and phenomenology. Prof. Neni also appreciated the book for its practical application in communication.<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    The last reviewer, Dr. phil. Subekti W. Priyadharma, S.Sos., M.A., shared his experience about the book written by Prof. Deddy and its influence in communication education. He stated how important the book is in understanding various communication theories, including ethnography and research methods, as well as phenomenological and post-phenomenological theories. Dr. Subekti emphasized that Prof. Deddy’s book helps in analyzing the relationship between humans and technology, as well as the concept of theory as a system that explains phenomena. He also suggested that readers consider various theories and qualitative research methods to understand the complexity of social life.<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    The book review event “Communication Theories: Practical Applications” at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University ended with a closing speech by Prof. Deddy Mulyana, M.A., Ph.D.. He appreciated the in-depth discussions and contributions from the book reviewers. He also highlighted the views expressed by scholars and emphasized the importance of understanding communication theory in practice.
