The Center for Environmental Communication Studies of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University organized the 2024 Wildlife Journalism Competition<\/em> (WJC), with the title “Awarding Young Journalists’ Masterpieces in Wildlife Conservation”. The event was held on Thursday, November 28, 2024 at 07.30-16.30 WIB at the Auditorium of the Postgraduate Building of Fikom Unpad. Dr. Uud Wahyudin, M.Si, as the Head of the Center for Environmental Communication Studies of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University in his speech conveyed the importance of preserving wildlife diversity. Furthermore, remarks from representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations <\/em>(FAO) explained the importance of the One Health<\/em> approach that integrates environmental, wildlife and human health. Then, remarks were delivered by representatives of the U.S Agency for International Development<\/em> (USAID) Indonesia, Dean of Fikom Unpad Dr. Dadang Rahmat Hidayat, M.Si. who explained the importance of communication in the environment, especially regarding the diversity of wildlife in Indonesia and the last speech delivered by the Vice Rector for Research, Cooperation and Marketing of Universitas Padjadjaran, Prof. Rizky Abdulah, S.Si., Apt., Ph.D. who said that “Real evidence of environmental concern can be realized through creative, inspiring and in-depth journalistic work”.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the seminar session, four speakers presented a variety of topics relevant to the diversity of wildlife in Indonesia, ranging from the importance of protecting the environment, preserving the environment, and encouraging the younger generation to care about the environment.<\/p>\n

“The Power of Forest: Examining the Benefits of Trees for Humans and Animals”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first session entitled “The Power of Forest: Examining the Benefits of Trees for Humans and Animals” presented two presenters, Nunu Anugrah, S.Hut., M.Sc and Asril Abdullah, M.Si. Director of Species and Genetic Biodiversity Conservation of the Ministry of Forestry Nunu Anugrah S.Hut., M.Sc presented data on biodiversity in Indonesia, he emphasized that “We must be able to care for and maintain, because this entrustment must be enjoyed by future generations”. Then, he explained about ecosystem conservation to protect its species, through nature reserves or nature conservation, as well as the principles of biodiversity conservation and the role of the community in ecosystem conservation. Furthermore, Assistant Manager of Orangutan Haven, Asril Abdullah M.Si said that in Indonesia there are new orangutan species and explained about orangutan habitat and the function of orangutans for the community, namely spreading plant seeds about 80% through their feces. “There are still many orangutans and need to be saved for the sustainability of preserving the ecosystem,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Enviromental Issue: Seeing Wildlife Conservation through the Eyes of a Journalist”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The second seminar session was titled “Enviromental Issue: Seeing Wildlife Conservation through the Eyes of Journalists” with two presenters, Joni Aswira Putra and Dr. Herlina Agustin, S.Sos., M.T. Joni Aswira Putra, Chairman of the Society of Indonesian Environmental Journalists, explained the knowledge capacity of journalists in wildlife conservation. Then, he explained about biodiversity that has a very expensive capital price, where the broadcast may not necessarily be read, because it is less attractive than entertainment news or political issues. He then explained about the issues of environmental crimes, which can be investigated by the government and business actors, which then becomes a challenge for a journalist. He advised “to love coverage of wildlife, you should love the wildlife first”. Lecturer and Researcher at the Center for Environmental Communication Studies of Fikom Unpad Dr. Herlina Agustin, S.Sos., M.T. explained the difficult obstacles in covering biodiversity issues, “Journalists must be able to deal with media that do not understand biodiversity issues” she said. In addition, she conducted research on the issue of humans being eaten by tigers with research questions, namely why do tigers still eat humans? Do humans not know there are tigers around? Then, who should educate about wildlife around humans? According to him, the media has an important role in educating the public about biodiversity. The event continued with the awarding ceremony.<\/em> The first nomination was the “Feature” category which was won by the Zoonocare Team with the theme “Dera Zoonosis in the Shadow of Bandung City” from Padjadjaran University as the first winner. TriPena Team with the theme “The Malang Story of Japri the Long-tailed Monkey Wildlife” from Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University as the second winner, and Syahrial Dzikri Team with the theme “Monkey Hunger and Ecological Conflict in Buddan: Drought, Mining, and Fading Environmental Awareness” from Universitas 17 Agustus as the third winner.<\/p>\n

The next nomination was the “Photo Story” category. First place was won by Iswahyura P. W with the theme “The Important Role of Preservation and Conservation of Sea Turtles in Maintaining the Balance of Marine Ecosystems” from Yudharta Pasuruan University. Second place was won by Sultan Rafly with the theme “Fading Forest, Rising Conflict: Monkeys and Human Face Off in the Great Forest Park” from Padjadjaran University. Meanwhile, the third place was won by Arifin Al Alamudin with the theme “Once Given, Now Stealing” from the University of North Sumatra.<\/p>\n

The next nomination announced was the #WJChallange nomination, which was won by Shabrina Husna Amalia from Padjadjaran University. The next nomination was the Documentary Video category. The first place was won by Lagas Team with the theme “Stories Behind the Shell” from Udayana University. The second place winner was Vistalk Project Team with the theme “Selling and Buying Conservation” from Padjadjaran University. The third place was won by Team Eastern with the theme “Luna: Maluku’s Stolen Wings” from Pattimura University.<\/p>\n

The next event was the screening of the first winner’s documentary video results, as well as closing remarks delivered by representatives from Garda Animalia, FAO, and Dr. Herlina Agustin, S.Sos., M.T. as the Chief Executive of the 2024 Wildlife Journalism Competition (WJC).
