Since then, August 24 has been celebrated annually as Jakarta Children’s Reading Day.

This year’s Jakarta Children’s Reading Day (Hanjaba) in 2025 falls on a Sunday. From the outset, it was intended not merely as a ceremonial moment, but as a call to cultivate the habit of reading among young people, which is increasingly fading. Amid the hustle and bustle of Jakarta’s urban life, reading is increasingly being sidelined by instant entertainment from gadgets, social media, and online games.

Children’s literacy in Jakarta cannot be forced using the old model: sitting quietly reading thick books full of text. Children in big cities are accustomed to dynamic, fast-paced, and interactive visuals. Reading media that combines text with visual illustrations may be the key to attracting their interest. Media such as comics, graphic novels, and picture books should no longer be viewed as mere entertainment, but as a gateway to literacy that is relevant to the context of urban children.

Indonesia has a long tradition in the world of comics. Since the 1950s, names such as R. A. Kosasih with his puppet comics, Wid NS and Hasmi with their superheroes Godam and Gundala Putra Petir, as well as Hengki, Djair Warni, and Ganes TH with their martial arts stories that popularized Jaka Tuak, Jaka Sembung, and Si Buta dari Gua Hantu (The Blind Man from the Ghost Cave) have become icons of popular culture. Comics appeared in newspapers, magazines, and printed books. However, by the 1990s, Japanese comics (manga) began to dominate the shelves of Jakarta bookstores. Titles such as Doraemon, Dragon Ball, Detective Conan, Naruto, and Sailor Moon became daily reading for children.

Recently, the comic One Piece has become increasingly popular.

Meanwhile, picture books for early childhood have flourished through the publication of folk tales, fables, and educational stories with colorful illustrations. In the last two decades, graphic novels have also begun to gain popularity, especially among urban teenagers in Jakarta, with the emergence of both local works and translations.

Comics, graphic novels, and picture books are not new. But in today’s digital age, their presence has become increasingly important: they serve as a bridge for adaptive literacy media with the visual consumption patterns of Jakarta’s children.

Urban Children and Visual Literacy Patterns

Children in big cities like Jakarta grow up in a visual ecosystem. From an early age, they are accustomed to YouTube Kids, television animations, games with interactive visual narratives, and image- and video-based social media (Instagram, TikTok). It is therefore not surprising that purely text-based reading is often considered “boring.” This is where picture books, comics, and graphic novels come into play: presenting stories in a format that is familiar to the visual patterns of urban children.

By combining text and images, literacy is no longer just about reading words, but also reading visuals, understanding the plot, capturing expressions, and interpreting symbols. This skill is relevant in the digital age, where visual communication is increasingly dominant.

Picture Books as an Introduction to Early Literacy

For preschoolers and early elementary school children, picture books play an important role. Jakarta, with its fast-paced lifestyle and sometimes limited family space, requires simple yet effective literacy media.

Picture books are clearly a medium that can help children recognize letters and words from an early age. Through picture books, children become accustomed to connecting reading with everyday visuals seen in the city (flyovers, TransJakarta, Monas, traditional markets, etc.). As a bonus, picture books become a medium that binds parents and children together when read aloud together.

Comics as a Gateway to Literacy

Comics are often looked down upon, as if they were just light entertainment. However, various literacy studies prove that comics have a number of significant benefits. Comics can increase children’s interest in reading. Children who are reluctant to read textbooks may be interested in reading comics because they are more vivid. Comics can also train narrative comprehension. The storyline in comics teaches children about narrative structure: introduction, conflict, climax, and resolution. Although more concise, the text in comics commonly introduces new contextual vocabulary. More than that, comics can sharpen imagination and empathy. Through the visualization of characters and situations, comics help children empathize more easily and imagine the world of the story. These things are very useful as a foundation and bridge to advanced literacy.

Graphic Novels as Advanced Literacy

Graphic novels are a form of reading that falls between comics and novels. Visually similar to comics, they have longer, deeper, and more complex stories. Graphic novels can explore social, historical, and even psychological themes with a strong visual style.

For children in Jakarta, graphic novels can be a medium for critical learning, such as teaching ecological awareness, historical figures, friendship, identity, or even nationalism, which become easier to understand through visual narratives. Thus, graphic novels are not only entertainment, but also a means of emotional, social, and even political education for the city’s younger generation.

It is not impossible for many children to start with comics, then move on to graphic novels, and eventually progress to non-fiction books, because they are already accustomed to the reading process. Books as windows to see the world are increasingly open.

Comics and the Identity of Jakarta Children

Moreover, comics and graphic novels in recent developments have also attracted a lot of attention. Beyondtopia Legends, the first Indonesian comic published in the United States, has been a success. Within just one month of its release by FairSquare Comics, the first volume of Beyondtopia Legends in the US sold out over 1,400 copies. By the end of 2023, Beyondtopia Legends also received positive responses in Southeast Asia. At the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre in Singapore and at Super Manila in the Philippines, the compilation version of Beyondtopia Legends sold out completely.

The success of Beyondtopia is also a major achievement for Indonesia. The creator, Bryan Valenza, a Jakarta native and graduate of Itenas, has successfully told local Indonesian legends with global appeal. Take, for example, the comic Bandits of Batavia, which presents Betawi folklore in a modern package. This comic is set in the city of Batavia in 1865, with the main character Si Pitung facing a gang of criminals who possess five supernatural powers: immortality, magic, mysticism, superposition, and pure physical strength. Or the comic Lutung Kasarung, which tells the story of saving the world and preventing the apocalypse from zombies. Meanwhile, the comic Bawang Putih features a wizard who must solve supernatural cases around the world.

Prestige Beyondtopia on the international stage will certainly inspire enthusiasm and pride among young people, who are its target audience. Thus, visual literacy is not only about reading, but also about building identity, togetherness, and pride in the local and national culture of young people.

Jakarta Children’s Reading Day should be a turning point in how we view literacy. Reading is no longer synonymous with thick books full of text, but can come in forms that are more familiar to urban children: comics, graphic novels, and picture books.

Amidst the challenges of the digital age, visual media has become an effective gateway to fostering reading interest, training imagination, and building the identity of Jakarta’s children. Most importantly, literacy should not be viewed merely as a technical skill, but rather as an emotional, social, and cultural experience that shapes their future.

Therefore, as we celebrate Jakarta Children’s Reading Day, let us also celebrate the diversity of reading mediums. True literacy occurs when every child finds their own door—and for Jakarta’s children, comics, graphic novels, and picture books are one of the key elements.

News can also be accessed via the page https://plus.kapanlagi.com/

By: Teddy K Wirakusumah Lecturer in Visual Communication, Faculty of Communication, Padjadjaran University On August 24, 2006, Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso gathered thousands of children from all over Jakarta to participate in a group reading activity at the National Monument (Monas). …
