Fathia Bixa Orellana, a Proud Basketball Athlete of Fikom Unpad

Fathia Bixa Orellana, a student from the Public Relations Department, Padjadjaran University class of 2022 who stole the spotlight in the world of sports playing basketball at Binus’ Triumph Ascent competition in 2023 and won first place with the JABAR team.

Born and raised in Bogor, Bixa’s journey into the world of sports began at an early age, driven by her love for various sporting activities. From a young age, Bixa showed an inclination towards sports, trying out various sporting activities including swimming, badminton, and even rock climbing. However, it was during her teenage years that she found her niche on the basketball court.

Bixa made a spontaneous decision to join the basketball team during her middle school years at SMPN 3 Cibinong, Bogor Regency.

“I just randomly chose basketball as an extracurricular activity,” he says. “I can’t even explain why, it was just a sudden decision.”

Little did she know that her choice would shape her path as an athlete. Bixa continued her academic pursuits while simultaneously honing her talents as a student-athlete at PPOPM (Student and Student Sports Education and Training).

As both a student and an athlete, Bixa has the same responsibilities. Bixa strives to balance her academics with intense training sessions on the court.

“Being a student-athlete is not just about excellence in sports but about discipline, time management, and striving to be the best in all aspects of life,” Bixa emphasizes. “In addition, my competitive nature drives me to constantly challenge my boundaries and strive to be the best.”

Bixa was also selected as one of the Jr. NBA All-Star participants along with 15 other lucky people. The trip took Bixa to Shanghai, China where he met Jr. NBA All-Stars from different countries. They practiced and competed and watched the NBA Global Games at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. “This experience was a very memorable moment for me,” she said.

In 2019, Bixa suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury to her left knee during a match in Bali against the Merpati Bali club. This was Bixa’s lowest point in her basketball career, “There was a feeling of fear, trauma every time I saw the court. I was traumatized every time I saw the court,” said Bixa.

Even so, Bixa received full support from those closest to her, especially her family who encouraged her to undergo therapy. Bixa underwent intensive therapy, including physiotherapy three times a week and PRP injections in the knee, for 6 months to 1 year, and is still undergoing further physiotherapy today.

Thanks to a very supportive environment, she was slowly able to return to playing basketball. After recovering from her injury, Bixa was called up to play in the 2020 U-18 Regional Championship and the 2020 U-18 Naional Championship, both of which she won 3rd place. This is a testament to her dedication and skills in basketball.

“It’s been a long journey, filled with countless hours of training, early mornings, and some serious self-doubt along the way. Just dont let anything stop you. ” says Bixa. As Bixa’s basketball journey continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: her unbreakable spirit and determination will lead her to even greater success in the world of sports and bring honor to the Public Relations Study Program, Universitas Padjadjaran.
