Empowerment Activities for Village Libraries, Schools/Madrasahs, and Universities in Sumedang Regency
[Jatinangor] The National Library of Indonesia, in collaboration with Padjadjaran University, is holding a Library Empowerment Strengthening event for school/madrasah library managers and librarians, university libraries, village/sub-district libraries, as well as literacy activists and community reading parks throughout Sumedang Regency today, Friday, August 22, 2025, from 8:00 AM until completion at Bale Rucita, the Rectorate of Unpad’s Jatinangor Campus. This activity aims to enhance the understanding and capacity of library staff regarding library empowerment based on the National Library Standards (SNP), as well as to foster collaboration and synergy between school/madrasah libraries, university libraries, and village/subdistrict libraries.

The event, initiated by the Center for the Development of School/Madrasah and Higher Education Libraries (P3SMPT) of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia and fully supported by the Library and Information Science Study Program of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University (Fikom Unpad), this event features expert speakers in the field of libraries and librarianship, including:
Dr. Erli Sarilita, M.Sc., Ph.D, Director of Non-Degree Education at Padjadjaran University, discussed “Collaboration between universities (Unpad) and the National Library of Indonesia in empowering libraries.”
Dr. Rd. Funny M. Elita, M.Si., Head of the Library and Information Science Study Program at Fikom Unpad discussed “Improving the knowledge and skills of library managers through cross-sectoral synergy.”
Hari Tri Santosa, AP., MM., Head of the Library and Archives Office of Sumedang Regency discussed “Efforts to improve cross-sectoral collaboration, increase community literacy, and encourage reading in Sumedang Regency.”
Dr. Upriyadi, SS., M.Hum., Senior Librarian at the National Library of Indonesia, discussed “The Role of P3SMPT Perpusnas RI in the guidance and development of libraries in Indonesia.”
Nurmaya Prahatmaja, S.Sos., M.A., Library and Information Science Study Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University, discussed “Good practices of collaboration and synergy between libraries in Indonesia.”

In addition to presenting material, this activity will also include interactive discussion sessions and group work involving school/madrasah libraries, university libraries, and village/sub-district libraries in developing various collaborative programs for the future by empowering libraries, both in terms of collection utilization, through literacy programs tailored to community needs, as well as through other facilities and infrastructure available in the libraries.

“This initiative is a concrete effort undertaken by P3SMPT Perpusnas RI and Unpad to establish close collaboration and synergy among libraries. However, not all libraries, particularly school/madrasah libraries and village/subdistrict libraries, have the capacity and access to engage in collaboration, especially in terms of collections and other infrastructure. These two types of libraries require guidance, direction, and examples of best practices in collaboration and synergy, particularly from university libraries. Universitas Padjadjaran is ready to serve as a close partner of the National Library of Indonesia in efforts to enhance library empowerment and literacy in the community,” stated Erli Sarlilita.
“Law No. 43 of 2007 on Libraries stipulates that the National Library of Indonesia (Perpusnas RI) has the responsibility to provide guidance and development to all types of libraries, including school/madrasah libraries, university libraries, and village/sub-district libraries. Through these library empowerment activities, Perpusnas RI, through the Center for the Development of School/Madrasah and University Libraries (P3SMPT), carries out this mandate,” said Upriyadi.
“School/madrasah libraries, university libraries, and village/subdistrict libraries play an important role in improving community literacy. Libraries are not only centers of knowledge but also centers of civilization when fully utilized. All parties must collaborate and synergize to educate the community, making it more literate, and libraries must take concrete actions toward the community through various creative and innovative literacy programs,” said Nurmaya Prahatmaja.
